Ice Storm....

An ice storm moved in last night and I lost power. Just got it back on. It was a good test of my backups. It's a good thing I had some starter fluid, cause that genny wouldn't start without it. Brought the kerosene heater in and that worked flawlessly. My only real worry was the neighbors who live in an all electric home. I decided that I wasn't going to answer the door if they came by. Once I provide them with comforts, they'll depend on me. I've tried to convince them of the value of a backup heat system. I'm sure they were cold last night. Oh well, not my problem. Test your backups and make sure it all works....

The problem for them isn't one cold night. It's the couple of weeks without running water because every pipe in the house burst, and plumbers are already working 18 hour days, and copper pipe costs 4x what it did the night before.

Glad you were able to give a "test run" of your systems nothing like the real deal' to see how you fare.

Many folks may have diffrent oppinions but I must tell you ......you were 1000% correct in your thinking about your neighbors.. my mom would always tell me: AN EDUCATION IS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU DO LISTEN......EXPERIENCE IS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU DONT !!!

Let the pay the "full price" for there education in the school of hard knocks

You did good....

Just two things I'd recommend. A damn good muffler on the generator, and black your windows. Jealous victims will destroy what you won't share, refusing to accept their own failure.

Agreeded ..... blackout windows and nice 357."peacekeeper" you only have to be hypervigilent for the 6-8 weeks of the first cold season in grid down situation.

Mother nature will take care of those"victims" before then.

Sad but true

just got back from the bank. sign on the door said: 'closed till further notice do to the power outage.' in the grocery store they were talking about other business's that are closed because of this. I saw some flashes of light in the sky last night, so something let loose. Probably sent a surge into some places. I looked at my dimly lit lamp and ran for the breaker box. Shutting off the main breaker and thus all power to the house. Everything in my place survived.
